Study Opportunity: University of Canterbury Now Open to Chinese Year 11 Graduate
Release time: 2025-05-30

UCIC, located on the University of Canterbury’s Christchurch campus, offers a supportive and academically rigorous environment designed to help international students transition smoothly into New Zealand university life. The college emphasizes small class sizes, one-on-one academic mentoring, and a strong focus on English language development, study skills, and personal growth.

Fast-Track to a Bachelor’s Degree

Students can enroll in the University Transfer Program (Diploma), a 12-month course split over three semesters. Upon completion, students progress directly to the second year of a University of Canterbury bachelor's degree. Three academic streams are available:

  • Science – Prepares students for fields like computer science, financial engineering, mathematics, and data science.

  • Engineering – Leads into the University’s 4-year engineering degree with eight major specializations.

  • Business – Offers core training in accounting, economics, management, statistics, and information systems.

Entry Requirements for Chinese Students

The academic entry standards vary by stream:

  • Business: Year 11 graduates with an average of 70% in academic subjects (excluding Chinese, Politics, and English), or Year 12 graduates with an average of 60%.

  • Science: Completion of Year 12 with a 60% average, including at least 65% in Mathematics.

  • Engineering: Year 11 graduates must have at least 70% in academic subjects and a minimum of 75% in Mathematics, Physics, or Chemistry, depending on the specialization.

Language Pathways Also Available

In addition to meeting academic requirements, students must meet English proficiency standards equivalent to IELTS 5.5, with no band below 5.0. Those who don’t yet meet this threshold can take the EAP1 course at CCEL, UCIC’s affiliated English language school.

A Global Gateway

This program reflects the University of Canterbury’s commitment to expanding access for talented international students and preparing them for successful academic and professional careers worldwide. UCIC students benefit not only from high-quality education but also from personalized guidance as they adapt to life in New Zealand.

For Chinese students dreaming of an international degree, this new pathway could be the key to a world-class education in just three years.
